First edition of Comus by John Milton, undated (1921). Hardback clothbound with gilt tooled title and pictorial vignette to cover and to spine. Top edge of pages green. Pictorial endpapers. Ex Libris Calvert & Eleanor Spensley bookplate to fep. Original ink drawing to half title page of a goat-headed satyr in fashionable clothes, which is inscribed ‘To Mr Calvert Spensley / from Arthur Rackham / 15.11.21’. Full colour tipped in illustrated frontispiece with tissue guard. Printed quote to verso of tissue guard facing title page. Illustrated vignette to title page. Additional twenty one illustrations throughout, several full colour tipped in with tissue guard and the remainder within the text. Loose original pencil sketch signed Arthur Rackham on his headed notepaper of a man in a bowler hat and a woman in a feathered hat (? racecourse goers) tucked into the book. Together with three photographic ‘Rough Proofs’ for the Comus endpaper illustrations. A little rubbing to cover and split in cloth over hinge. Corners and spine edges a little bumped. Cracking to gutter. Light to moderate foxing and spotting to pages throughout, including loose sketch, although despite this the pages remain relatively clean and bright. Some tears and creases to the top of one of the photographic rough proofs. Binding nice and tight. 75 pp.

Printed quote to verso of tissue guard facing the title page. Pictorial decorative border to title page. Additional fourteen colour tipped in illustrations with tissue guard, and text illustrations to head chapters. Light shelf wear to edges and spine a little faded/discoloured. Endpapers and prelims are moderately to heavily spotted. Pages clean and bright despite a little light spotting throughout. Binding nice and tight. 136 pp.
Overall very good copies, and entirely unique and personal. A very desirable pair for any collection.
